If you are trying to cut down on caffeine, coffee and soft drinks you need something extra special to replace them. These are my 5 favourite hot and cold Elixirs for enjoying at different times of the day. Not only are they immensely satisfying but they also beneficial to your health!

This is my ‘basic’ everyday blend, which I modify according to how I’m feeling. Sometimes I add a tbsp. of Maca if I want to do some focused work, sometimes some cardamom powder and a pinch of cayenne for a more spicy awakening mix.

I simply blend all ingredients for 30 seconds or so in my Nutribullet. If you have a regular blender you might need to go a bit longer to make sure the date is blended sufficiently. What you will find is the addition of the coconut oil acts as an emulsifier and makes a wonderful frothy delicacy and also releases certain compounds from the cacao that do not get released if the mix is simply stirred. So win-win! This beats anything your local coffee shop can create hands down and is a lot better for you! Ingredients per person

 

1-2 tsp. of Raw Organic Cacao Powder

1 tsp. of Berry Radical Antioxidant Blend

1 tsp. Coconut Oil or Butter

½ tsp. of Cinnamon

1 Medjool Date

pinch of Pink Himalayan Salt

6-8 oz. hot Filtered Water

This is my morning drink and really get’s me going! Very warming and stimulating and great before food to awaken the digestion after sleep. Turmeric is a superfood against inflammation and great for the blood.

 

 

 

Ingredients per person

 

Thumb of fresh Ginger

½ litre of filtered water

3 Cardamom pods

½ tsp. of Turmeric powder

½-whole lemon

Honey to taste/ Agave for non- beegans

 

  1. Chop ginger and boil in water for a minimum of 10 minutes with the cardamom. This mixture can be reused and added to throughout the day.
  2. Squeeze half a lemon into your cup with the turmeric and honey/agave.
  3. Strain the ginger mix into cup and stir.

 

 

Turmeric, Ginger Latte

Similar to the mix above, this is a bit more of a treat. This is great when I find myself craving something creamy, sweet and warming. As with the blended cacao drink, the coconut oil works as an emulsifier and creates something very different once blended.

 

 

 

 

Ingredients per person

 

Thumb of fresh Ginger

½ tsp. of Turmeric powder or thumbnail of fresh root

½-whole Lemon

Agave or 1 Medjool date

1 tbsp. of Coconut Oil or Butter

½ litre of filtered Water

 

  1. Chop up ginger and turmeric if using and boil in water for a minimum of 10 minutes.
  2. Add all ingredients to the blender including the ginger infusion
  3. Blend for 30 seconds
  4. Serve

 

 

 

Goji Hibiscus Love Potion

Herbal Elixir Recipes: Goji Berry Love Potion

 

This was a brew we created for our engagement party which we had along side a few other elixirs. Would also work well as an unusual mixer with sparkling wine. It’s fruity and floral and very calming. Rose is highly therapeutic and works with the heart chakra. The berries are all powerful antioxidants with the shizandra being one of the only foods carrying all flavour profiles of sweet, bitter, salty and sour. It is highly prized in Chinese medicine as a blood tonic.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ingredients for a pitcher

 

1 litre of Filtered or Spring Water

½ cup of Goji Berries

¼ cup of Hibiscus

1 tsp. Schizandra Berries

1 tbsp. of honey

2 tsp. Rosewater

Ice and Sparkling Water to serve

 

  1. Bring water to boil.
  2. Add goji berries, shizandra, hibiscus. Let steep for one hour.
  3. Strain through a fine mesh sieve.
  4. Whisk in honey and rose.
  5. Refrigerate
  6. Serve over ice topped with sparkling water

 

 

Mint Matcha Mocktail

We also had this minty mix for our engagement party and presented it as more of an energising, stimulating concoction. Great before or after food with the ginger and mint stimulating good digestion. The rhodiola is an amazing superfood adoptogen with a host of benefits including increased mental and physical capacities. It can be successful for treating chronic fatigue, adrenal fatigue, stress and mild depression.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ingredients for a pitcher

 

2 litres of Filtered or Spring Water

large handful of fresh Ginger Root

4 lemons

Bunch of fresh Mint

6 tbsp. Matcha Green Tea

Rhodiola Tincture- 200mg per serving

Agave to taste

 

  1. Make a ginger reduction by boiling the root in the water for minimum 30 minutes.
  2. Strain and whisk in the matcha and lemon juice from 3 of the lemons
  3. Crush half the mint in a pestle and mortar and add to infuse.
  4. Let cool and refrigerate
  5. Add agave to taste and whisk
  6. Add the rest of the mint to your chosen pitcher with the last lemon cut into slices and the appropriate measure of rhodiola depending on how many servings you have
  7. Serve with ice
